The Challenge
Fortna’s warehouse floor operators were working with fragmented, screen-heavy mobile workflows that slowed down picking, packing, and shipping operations. The existing interface required too many taps, created cognitive overload in high-pressure environments, and wasn’t optimized for one-handed use on industrial handheld devices.
My Role
As Manager of UX Design, I led the end-to-end redesign of Fortna’s mobile operator experience — from initial research and stakeholder alignment through design, A/B testing, and final delivery. I collaborated closely with product, engineering, and operations teams across multiple client deployments.
The Process
— Discover
I conducted research with 200+ warehouse operators across multiple client sites, observing real workflows, identifying friction points, and mapping mobility patterns on the warehouse floor. Key findings pointed to excessive screen counts, poor visual hierarchy under low-light conditions, and workflows that didn’t match natural operator movement patterns.
— Define & Design
Using findings to inform a redesign strategy, I streamlined operator flows, reduced cognitive load through improved visual hierarchy, and optimized the interface for one-handed use on industrial handhelds. I leveraged AI-assisted analysis tools to model mobility patterns and identify further optimization opportunities.
— Deliver & Measure
Redesigned workflows were validated through A/B testing with operators ranging from first-time users to experienced warehouse veterans. Results were consistent and measurable across both groups.

60%+
Reduction in Clicks, Load times and Processing Speed
In Summary
- Designed and documented over 40 end-to-end operator workflows within Fortna's Warehouse Execution System — the most comprehensive UX overhaul in the platform's history.
- Through six months of iterative refinement and continuous user validation, optimized the mobile platform to deliver over 60% improvements across load times, interaction clicks, and system response rates — dramatically reducing friction for operators working in fast-paced warehouse environments.
- Conceived, designed, and delivered Fortna's first-ever mobile and responsive platform experience — creating an entirely new operator-level interface from the ground up with no prior foundation to build on.
- Took Fortna's first mobile platform experience from blank canvas to fully developed and deployed product in six months — navigating zero existing mobile foundation, new design patterns, and cross-functional alignment across product and engineering simultaneously.
This project reinforced that in high-pressure operational environments, every screen you eliminate and every tap you remove has a direct impact on business performance. Great mobile UX in enterprise isn’t about aesthetics — it’s about reducing friction at the moment it matters most.
